Stéphanie Parent

Stéphanie Parent is a translator and writer. She worked in consulting and human resources management for over fifteen years before returning to her dream of devoting herself entirely to writing and pursuing graduate studies in translation. She is a member of the Literary Translators Association of Canada and the Union des écrivaines et écrivains québécois. As an author, she publishes novels that address intimate and contemporary themes. Her career is distinguished by a rigorous yet sensitive approach, both in her writing and in her translation of literary works.

Her history

As a teenager, she was already writing stories. Then, over the years and through her educational choices, she focused on her rational side, studying and working in administration and human resources. She stopped writing, but she never stopped reading—a lot, often, everywhere. As she approached her forties, her first love for writing returned. It manifested itself subtly. At first, it was just professional dissatisfaction. One day, it became clear that she needed to revive this side of herself that she had suppressed for nearly twenty years.

Her style and inspirations

The main subject of Stéphanie’s art is the intimate lives of women, especially their inner conflicts and their search for self. Her writing style is sometimes poetic, sometimes sharp. She likes to stir up the emotions of her characters (and her readers!). The writer enjoys writing sensitive stories that resonate with women, stories that are both confrontational and soothing.

She finds inspiration everywhere! It could be a sentence read in a book, a scene in a movie, or an anecdote she heard. Her key phrase, which opens up many horizons for her, is “Yes, but what if it didn’t happen that way?” But above all, Stéphanie reads even more than she writes. She reads everything, not just the genre of her own books.

Her art

The common thread running through all her books is that women have the right to reinvent themselves and change course when an aspect of their lives no longer suits them. No one else can do it for them. On a small or large scale, women must be given the right to choose for themselves, to give up what no longer fits with their values. Stéphanie likes to say that each of her small revolutions is worth it.

One of the aspects the author enjoys most is the moment when she has to construct the psychological evolution of her main characters. The plot often starts from there. Otherwise, the work of rewriting, where she polishes the text and prunes away the superfluous, remains a pure labor of love. Finally, meeting her readers at book fairs is very precious to Stéphanie.
