He completed a degree in Pharmacy at the Universit\u00e9 de Montr\u00e9al, but is a self-taught painter. In 1949, he met Paul-\u00c9mile Borduas, who would have an enormous influence on his early work.<\/p>\n\n<p>He has had numerous solo exhibitions in Montreal, Quebec City, Toronto and New York. In 1973, the Mus\u00e9e d\u2019art contemporain de Montr\u00e9al presented a first retrospective show of his work and, in 1987, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts held a second.<\/p>\n\n<p>He has had numerous solo exhibitions in Montreal, Quebec City, Toronto and New York.
