Jean McEwen was born in Montreal in 1923 and died in 1999. He completed a degree in Pharmacy at the Université de Montréal, but is a self-taught painter. In 1949, he met Paul-Émile Borduas, who would have an enormous influence on his early work.

He has had numerous solo exhibitions in Montreal, Quebec City, Toronto and New York. In 1973, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal presented a first retrospective show of his work and, in 1987, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts held a second.
