Sonya Dessureault is a professional West Coast Swing dancer at Champion level, as well as being qualified in teaching and performing pole dance, aerial tissu, yoga, tarot and author of The Dating Book – How not to find love. She has been practicing WCS for over 10 years and has performed worldwide in over 20 countries. Originally from Quebec, she studied dance at Cégep de Saint-Laurent, before joining a hip-hop troupe at McMaster University in Ontario. On her return to Quebec, she became a professional salsa dancer and was invited to teach and perform across Canada.
Back in Quebec for the past two years, she now helps build the community here. She teaches on her own and for schools, performs at various events, and is engaged worldwide for teaching, judging and performance contracts.
For those unfamiliar with the style, West Coast Swing is a couple’s dance to whatever music you hear on the radio. It evolves over time, according to popular music, famous dancers and fashions. There is a guide and a performer, but unlike all other couple dances, the performer can participate in the construction of the dance, making each performance unique. It’s a style full of elegance and humor, which makes every performance captivating.
Sonya’s inspirations are Kellese Key, Ann-Marie Marker and Galen Hooks. Above all, she likes to make dance accessible to all enthusiasts and show them that they don’t need to bend to a particular aesthetic; once the basic technique has been learned, it’s time for exploration and self-discovery!
